Incheon City to operate a ‘no disposable products’ eco-friendly resource circulation funeral home from the 1st

All university hospital funeral homes in Incheon are operated as “no disposable products” eco-friendly resource recycling funeral homes.

From December 1, Inha University Hospital, Gachon University Gil Hospital, and Catholic University Incheon St. Mary's Hospital will start operating funeral homes, and Catholic Kwandong University International St. Mary's Hospital will operate from mid-December.

In November last year, Incheon City signed a business agreement with the Incheon Medical Center, a representative public medical institution in the region, and the funeral halls of four university hospitals in the region to “create a funeral culture without disposable products” and has been preparing to create an eco-friendly funeral home.

Accordingly, following the Incheon Medical Center in May last year, the funeral home of a university hospital will also operate a funeral home without disposable products.

Disposables have been used indiscriminately in funeral homes, a typical industry that uses many disposables, because they can be easily used and thrown away.

It is estimated that more than 10 tons of disposable items are used and thrown away each year in one funeral home.

The use of disposable products at funeral homes is wrongly established as a culture to the extent that companies provide disposable products with the company logo to award-winning employees, and the use of disposable products is included as a mandatory item in the mutual aid company contract.

In order to establish an eco-friendly funeral culture that does not use disposable products, the funeral home of university hospitals provides users with sanitary and elegant tableware sets such as dishes, plates, cups, and cutlery that are sterilized and washed instead of disposable products.

The city of Incheon plans to support the purchase of multi-use containers and actively promote publicity to expand citizens' use.

“Eco-friendly resource circulation funeral home signboard” will be attached and a promotional banner will be installed, and online publicity will be conducted using the ‘Environmental City Incheon’ website and SNS.

Residents and their bereaved families who use eco-friendly resource circulation funeral homes will be able to treat their mourners neatly with multi-use containers instead of single-use items, so they will be able to serve mourners who have taken difficult steps more sincerely.

In addition, by holding an eco-friendly funeral that does not produce waste, it will be possible to contribute to passing on a clean environment to future generations.

In fact, according to a survey at the funeral home of the Incheon Medical Center, 76% of users who held a funeral using a multi-use container said they were willing to recommend the use of the multi-use container, indicating that the satisfaction of users was very high. Only 6% of the respondents said no.

Jeong Nak-sik, head of the city's resource recycling department, said, "I hope that the citizens will agree on the problem that a sustainable environment cannot be passed on to future generations if we continue to use single-use products indiscriminately like now for the convenience of the moment." "Sustainable eco-friendly resources In order to create a circular city, 'Incheon, an environment-friendly city', we expanded the eco-friendly funeral home without disposable products to private funeral homes, established a system for sharing disposable cups in cafes near the city hall, and revitalized the zero-waste market. We will continue to discover and promote it,” he said.
